Let’s talk about it!
Hey there, let’s talk about something spicy, steamy, and taboo in faith circles – sexual desires! Oh yeah, we’re going there!
First things first, let’s get one thing straight – having sexual desires is completely normal. We’re humans, and God created us as sexual beings. So, don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed about it! You’re in good company – even King David struggled with sexual desires and wrote about it in Psalm 51:5.
But here’s the catch – as believers, we have to make sure we’re keeping our desires in check and aligning them with God’s will. As it says in 1 Corinthians 6:18-20, “Flee from sexual immorality…you are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” So, how do we do that?
- Open up about it, seek counsel!
Let’s meet Emeka, a devout Christian who struggled with sexual desires. He thought they were sinful and felt ashamed, so he kept them to himself. That was a BIG mistake! As it says in Proverbs 12:15, “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.” He tried everything but sought counsel and support from trusted believers. One day, his fiancé who was also in the same shoes as himself visited him at his residence for the first time unannounced to pray about their future home, and like they say… one thing led to the other and there they were celebrating the birth of their first child nine months later. Emeka could have saved himself a lot of trouble if he had sought counsel from a trusted friend or spiritual advisor.
So, take a page out of Emeka’s book, and don’t go it alone! Seek counsel from someone you trust.
- Ask God for Grace
More importantly, rely on God’s grace. His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9), so don’t be afraid to turn to Him when you’re struggling. One of the biggest challenges of struggling with sexual urges as a believer is the sense of shame and guilt that often accompanies these feelings. We feel like we’re failing as Christians like we’re not living up to the expectations of our faith. But the truth is, God loves us even in our weakness. He knows that we’re not perfect, and He still wants to walk with us through our struggles.
- Find healthy outlets for your sexual energy
Another key is finding healthy outlets for your sexual energy. Get creative with it! Try channeling your energy into exercise, volunteer work, or any other positive outlet that speaks to you.
- Seek out resources on Christian Sexuality
And don’t be afraid to do some research – There are many books, podcasts, and workshops available that can help you to better understand your sexual desires within the context of your faith.
- Avoid triggers
Identify situations or environments that tend to trigger your sexual urges and avoid them if possible. For example, if you struggle with pornography, avoid visiting websites that might lead to it.
At the end of the day, the most important thing is to remember that you’re not alone. God loves you, flaws and all, and He’s always there to guide you towards a life that honors Him. So, don’t be afraid to speak up and seek help. As it says in Proverbs 11:14, “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.”
Remember, it’s okay to struggle. We all do. But as young believers, we have the power to honor God with our bodies and live a life that is in line with His will. So, let’s support each other, educate ourselves, and strive toward purity together.
